Vackoló Animal Shelter

The animal shelter of Vackoló Közhasznú Állatvédő Egyesület is in Hungary, 5 kilometres from both the northern shore of Lake Balaton and the county seat of Veszprém. Our motto: "Vackoló – the place that depends on us is entrusted to our soul"

Our nonprofit association was founded in 2006, determined to help stray, vulnerable, neglected, abandoned, unwanted, and often wounded or injured animals. For 18 years, we have been engaged in animal protection, in particular, we are committed to ensure a dignified future for companion animals.

Ours is the largest animal shelter in the region. Our activities include rehoming dogs and cats. On average, we find new loving homes for approximately 200 dogs per year, approximately 30% of these dogs find its permanent owner in Germany.

Life in our shelter

Currently, we are taking care of 101 dogs and 21 cats who live with us as family members. We treat them with respect but with firmness. Depending on their habitus and temperament, some of the dogs can move freely during the day in a larger area, in the designed enclosures, while others are kept isolated. We seek to protect them from adverse weather conditions. In the summer, we protect them from the heat with shades, humidifying fans, and pools, and in the winter, we provide them with covered kennels and insulated dog houses. The puppies, the infirm and the elderly dogs are accommodated either in our heated cottage, or at volunteers’ homes. Our accommodation capacities are limited, but we try to rescue and help all the animals in trouble, that is why many of them spend the rest of their lives with us. These include the elderly dogs, the ones that are unfit for adoption, and those in need of long-term care. Since we keep accurate and up-to-date records of all the animals that come into our care, and we follow all legal requirements concerning our operations, our organisation and our shelter fully complies with all applicable regulations at each official controls and inspections.

What kind of care and alimentation we provide?

We provide the following healthcare to our residents: ID chips, vaccination against rabies and two combined vaccinations, deworming and anti-parasite treatment. We manage the spaying and neutering of adult dogs. We also have them tested for heartworm disease by Knott’s tests. We only place puppies for adoption to would-be owners if they undertake to have them spayed / neutered.

In case of adoption across borders, we can have the EU pet passport and the TRACES (TRAde Control and Expert System) certificate issued, according to the rules laid down by the European Union.

Our veterinarians: dr. István Pásztor (Kedvenc Állatorvosi Rendelő veterinary clinic, Veszprém, Hungary) and dr. Rita Szauer (official veterinarian, Veszprém, Hungary). They dedicate all their time and energy to provide medical care, treatment, and healing services to our residents. If, based on their health condition, our residents require specialist care, we spare no expense and time to have them treated at Fuziovet Animal Hospital. This animal hospital is in Budapest, it has state-of-the-art equipment, and is one of the highest professional level hospitals in Hungary. We also place great emphasis on the nutrition of our residents, which is why puppies get Royal Canin Puppy, while adults get Royal Canin Special Club Pro Energy HE, Happy Dog or Dog Chow dry food, and we provide special food for the elderly or infirm animals. The animals we rescue often enter the shelter emaciated and after along period of starvation, so we do not skimp on high-quality, adequate quantity anddelicious snacks.

Our team

Zsuzsa Farkas chairwoman of the organization and András Deák work at the shelter. They take care of the animals every day – weekends, holidays, in the scorching summer heat and in the freezing cold, and even into the night. Thanks to the authentic and hard work, many volunteers has joined us, and we can now regularly count on them. These volunteers contribute actively to our operations: they transport our residents to the vet, take promotion photos and videos for rehoming, pick up and

deliver the donated supplies, publish posts on our Facebook page, prepare dog food, and help us with the translation of specialized technical texts. As a result of our hard work, our commitment, and our community, we are known as an organization that fully fulfills its duties and achieves its mission.

Our community and supporters On Saturdays, visitors, donors, potential adopters, dog walkers and volunteers are all welcome in the shelter. On weekdays, we only have a limited capacity to do so. Every Saturday, when the weather conditions permit, there is an active and intensive community life in our shelter, we are often visited by kindergarten and school groups, families, groups of friends and workplace teams.

Our association regularly gets the opportunity to appear at nearby events (footraces, family days, festivals), we provide lectures on animal protection for children, and we have several charity points (at pet equipment shops, Fressnapf store, and veterinary clinic in Veszprém). Our sources of revenue are the personal income tax offered annually, material and monetary donations from our supporters, and the amounts received as local or national level governmental subsidies.

Among our patrons are Gyula Porga, mayor of Veszprém who adopted his dog ‘Belmondo’ from us, and Péter Ovádi, state commissioner for animal protection in Hungary. We cooperate with other animal protection organisations, animal rescue groups and with the animal protection and welfare authorities. Depending on our actual available human resources, we offer help and our capacities to pounds and animal protection associations located and operating in Eastern Hungary. In 2019, the Veszprém departmental body of the National Association of Entrepreneurs and Employers (Vállalkozók és Munkáltatók Országos Szövetsége; VOSZ) chose our organisation as the winner of the ’Kiemelkedő Társadalmi Szerepvállalásért Díj’ (and award given for outstanding social activities). In 2021, the city Assembly of the County Town of Veszprém awarded our team the ‘Pro Civitate’ award in recognition of our outstanding active citizenship as a nongovernmental organisation in the life of Veszprém city.
